Harry Potter and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
on August 5, 2008 at 12:53 amLet me start off by saying that Harry Potter has done plenty of good. It has encouraged kids to read, popularized wizardry, and it has made a single mother rich. I do, however, protest its literary shortcomings. What worries me is that years from now, when the young Harry Potter fanatics grow up to become teachers, principles, and superintendents, they will see it as a “classic” and approve it as a required reading in schools.
I’d like to point out the similarities between the Potter universe and that of one of the most iconic set of characters created by humans. Correct, I’m speaking of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
What the Hell do the Ninja Turtles have to do with Harry Potter? The four turtles have distinct personalities, right? And a reoccurring dynamic within Hogwarts is between the four houses. Let’s see if we can play sorting hat and find homes for these turtles:
- Leonardo: Brave, chivalrous, leader of the turtles, and a strong sense of honor. Seems like a gorgeous match for those courageous numbskulls in Gryffindor.
- Michelangelo: Loyal, easy-going, accepting, and identifies well with the common folk. That fellow would be amongst friends in Hufflepuff.
- Donatello: Brains of the turtles, creative, and wise. Such a bookworm would quickly be typecast as a Ravenclaw.
- Raphael: Slytherin. Duh.
As of now we’ve straightforwardly placed the four turtles into the four houses. Now, for both the wizards and the turtles, if only there was some calm, elderly mentor with long, grey hair who occasionally showed great mastery in the craft that he taught to his pupils.
Oh wait. I guess it turns out that Splinter and Dumbledore would make good poker buddies.
The when I first noticed this alignment I felt a bit cheated. I’m far from saying that Rowling ripped off TMNT. Rather, I think it’s silly that this literary piece that we are likely to see in schools someday lines up so well with an 80s pop culture craze starring four hominid turtles that practice ninjutsu. Also, they are teenagers. Who love pizza*.
There you have it. I’ve heard claims that Harry Potter is similar in storyline to Star Wars. Meh. There’s more alignment in the Manhattan sewers. And Hell, even with their differing personalities the turtles work as a team much more readily than the four houses in Rowling’s saga of owls, thinly-veiled Holocaust allegories, and long-term camping trips.
*Yes, in the Harry Potter series it’s never explicitly said that the kids love pizza. But c’mon, what teenagers don’t? I’ve had pizza in Britain. That shit is delicious.
I maintain that this theory is complete bollocks, and lacks even superficial entertainment value. On the other hand, wouldn’t it be hot if Hermione and April totally made out?
TOO CLOSE TO HOME, SPENCER?!
Every day that passes I am going to offer Wes one dollar more to hit you with his car when he next sees you, and then we’ll see how much your life is really worth. I bet you don’t last a week.
ALSO LOOK AT THOSE TURTLES’ HANDS THREE FINGERS WHAT IS THAT ABOUT THAT IS FREAKY AND STUPID
Hermoine has only been legal for roughly two pages of the entire Harry Potter series, Spence, which reveals your own preference of “superficial entertainment” within the halls of Hogwarts.
And Tony, running over Spencer with my car will prove difficult since he’s usually in the passenger seat when I’m giving his sorry ass rides.
ooooooh spnecer you just got toooolllldd, Buuuuurn
OR both TMNT Personalities and Hogwarts houses exhibit traits found in the four Myers-Briggs Type Indicator groupings:
NT “Rationals” Ravenclaw Donatello
SJ “Guardians” Hufflepuff Michaelangelo
NF “Idealists” Griffindor Leondardo
SP “Artisans” Slytherin Raphael
There is no way the above comment is correct. Four quadrant profiles are great examples, but this guy doesn’t seem to understand them very well.
Guardian: Right-brained processing. Organized and follows tradition. True Color system = Gold
Rational: Right-brained action-based. Intellectual and problem-solving. True Color system = Green
Idealist: Left-brained processing. Harmonious and overly emotional. True Color system = Blue
Artisan: Left-brained action-based. Thrill-seeking and rebellious. True Color system = Orange
There is no way at all that Michaelengelo is a Guardian. Just no way. Splinter or Leonardo, maybe, as those two are more likely to follow what they know about the world rather than going on feeling or trying to unlock some new way about it. Michaelengalo is the furthest thing from a structured, by-the-book type of character. I also think calling Leonardo an Idealist is questionable, but I could see it, though at the same time, his actions are not based off of feeling, and that is a clear distinction between him and that type. Donatello clearly is a Rational, but Raphael and Michaelangelo are more debateable. Neither care too much for tradition, and neither thinks about things very well before acting. Raphael seems to demonstrate the negatives of both Artisan and Idealist, though, as he reacts based on emotional issues (Idealist) and how he feels at the time, and also wants to do his own thing regardless of what others think (Artisan). Michaelengalo is more thrill-seeking (Artisan) but he’s also the more “peace and love” type (Idealist). Keep in mind that introversion and extraversion are additional qualities to the quadrants. Introverted Artisans and Extraverted Idealists are interesting types, and in some ways Raph and Mikey manifest different sides of the same, left-brained, coin, with Michaelengelo being the more light-hearted, and Raphael the more troubled.
